New to Beekeeping

Just started to get interested in beekeeping, and i got to talking about my parents about it and it turns out my grandfather and my grandfathers dad were both beekeepers, a fact i was unaware of when i gained interest. At any rate i have no idea what i'm doing other than the couple days i've spent researching it online. I was wondering if there is anyone willing to show me the ropes, a mentor if you will. I live in Jamestown and would be willing to travel if needed but the closer the better. I'm pretty sure this isn't a good time of the year to start a hive, so i think i've got plenty of time to learn the ropes before making the purchase.

Thanks,
Patrick

Welcome to the forum board and welcome to beekeeping. Please go ahead and put your city in your profile so that it comes up when you post in the future. All beekeeping is local, and some is VERY local, so it helps when we are responding to questions or requests.

We offer a beginner beekeeping course in the winter on Thursday nights beginning around mid January. It is given at the Ag Center where we meet. I'll be posting information about it in the next month or so. We have a password protected mentor page for GCBA members, but a number of us stand ready to mentor/help new beekeepers whether members or not.

You are more than welcome to come to our monthly meetings on the 2nd Tuesday of the month.

The local suppliers who go south to pick up packages of bees usually start taking orders in December or January for delivery in late March or early April. Most of us are in the process of getting our bees ready for winter (feeding if necessary, doing mite checks/treatments, etc.). This would not be a good time to try and start keeping bees, but as long as the days are sunny and above 60°F, we can go into hives and examine them. If weather permits and your schedule allows, we can go into one of my hives this coming Sunday afternoon around 1:00pm. You can give me a call at 336 740-1703 if you are interested. I am in Greensboro near Guilford College.

Hello, Patrick. You wouldn't happen to know anything about masonry, would you?

I plan to go into a couple hives in the next few days. If you would like to come down and look in them with me, then talk bees for awhile, you are more than welcome. My number is 302-2708. I am just north of Randleman.

OK. There was a Patrick from Greensboro who just joined another bee forum. He works in masonry. I was wondering if it was you.

I guess not.

Call me when you want.
