Swarm catch 3/11/22

Got a call this afternoon about a swarm not too far from my house in urban Greensboro. I'd call it a basketball-size swarm (definitely the biggest I've been able to catch), and luckily it was only about 10' up in a Camellia.

Lesson learned: No more screened bottom board for my swarm catching box! I think when I shook the swarm down into my boxes (at least half of them missed), the queen must have gone up under the bottom board. Because it was screened, I had a terrible time getting her and the bees to come INTO the entrance, since they apparently were fine to hang out underneath...

With the weather forecast for the weekend, I'm glad these girls weren't forced to stay out in the open!

I'm not going to make a separate post, but I know Phil Queen picked up a swarm in the area of County Park/Science Center yesterday (3/17/22) afternoon. I know this because the homeowner called me and I gave out 3 names and numbers from the swarm list. She called me this morning to let me know that Phil had picked up the swarm and to let me know how impressed she was with his knowledge and skill.
