How is everyone's year shaping up??

Post by Ron Young »

How is everyone's year shaping up? I know things are completely different in my two hives. I have some photo's of the two, and plan on getting them uploaded to photobucket sometime in the near future. But needless to say, one is doing well, and one is just scraping by.

I know one beek who had about all of his hives swarm, and he is now about double what he was, plus a few outside swarms that he caught!

I have 2 hives both started from nuc’s .
Both appear to be doing well, they haven’t swarmed yet, (that I am aware of) There is about a half a frame (one side) of capped honey or syrup not sure which in one hive and the other hive is drawing out 4.9 foundation in a medium above the brood chamber.
I don’t think I have SUPER hives but they seem to be doing OK.
I would like to get a few jars of honey if possible but my goal is to make it through the winter that is coming up in 5-6 months. If the two hives survive the winter I will expect a bit more next year.
Overall for the first year or months lol things are good for the bees. Me I am often confused.

Up to 52 now.
Making honey with the strongest. Had to split others off.
Just took 13 hives to Virginia for a later flow. A great way to make your hives pay.
Only 1 swarm that I am aware of, but I have probably had another.

Oh well.

Mine is great. I started out with hives that I purchased. So I was a beesitter for a while. Then I split the two hives and had to do a little work. Then my uncle caught two swarms for me and then there were 6. They appeared pretty strong. Then my hive swarmed that I had split and that makes 7. Now I am raising bees. I have learned more off the swarmed hives than the others. So much more to do. I checked on one of the ones that my uncle gave me and they are building queen cells. Only two frames of bees are in the hive. It was a small swarm. But why the cells???? Anyway, I took a frame of brood and put it in with them to help them make it. I also started feeding this hive. All others appear to be doing fine. I will be checking for a succesfully mated queen in the other hives this week. I really do enjoy this :D :D !!
