speaking of swarms

I helped another newbie beekeeper in Charlotte capture a small swarm 60 foot away from his hives. We put the small swarm into a hive.
Since the hive is new, he adds sugar water and one of the established hives looks like a super highway to the new hive. They don't fight, just suck down the sugar water.
So, the question is was this a swarm or an extention of the main hive? The bees seem to survive as they are building comb.
weird..
