Not a beekeeping thing, but neat and freaky at the same time

I went out yesterday to let the dog out, and it looked as though the grass was moving. I looked a bit closer, and I saw an entire colony of ants moving. The entire length of the colony was 15-20 feet and about 1.5 feet wide. Each ant was carrying an egg. This was the freakiest thing I have ever seen. They were headed diagonally across my yard and seemed to have an idea of where they were going. I am not for sure, but I think that they were fire ants. I captured a few in a jar for ID purposes.
Anyone know if fire ants are North of I-40 in Guilford County? I had heard that they were in S. Guilford County.
