Winter Feeding

Post by Pharmacyman »

I had two hives that needed feeding this year. I read somewhere to put the feed on the top of the frames of the broodnest box. Both hives had boxes above the brood box. So I placed fondant between the top box and the brood box.

Where do you place your solid winter feeding on a hive here in the Piedmont?

I have always used a 2" shim on top, which gives room for a fondant patty (like Hive Alive), sugar brick, mountain camp sugar, etc.

Typically, I would not suggest breaking open boxes during the winter. Assuming your top box is full of honey going into winter, this is the food they will consume as they move up. For me, winter feed options, like those mentioned above, are intended to be emergency feed and usually only become important in late Jan and Feb.
