Re: Honey Bees In A House

Tell him to save his money for now and spray them. Then when the SHB destroy the wax and the rotten, fermented honey destroys the inside walls and the mold sets in, he will have that saved money to help with the possible thousands it will cost to repair the inner walls and kill the mold. Then I can ...

Re: Carpenter Ants

What I have found is, "inner lid flat side up, ants take over." "inner lid, flat side down, ants no problem."
No hole in home made inner lid, ants destroy the hive.

Re: Almost Nectar Bound

Having put eggs in the mating nuc on Tuesday in prepping for the graft Thursday, we are going into it this Tuesday, March 15, to check for wild cells. Then again Sat. or Sunday to harvest the grafted cells. Anyone who wants to come will be welcome. It should be a learning experience for the newbees,...

Re: Almost Nectar Bound

We have queen cells started. Don't know how many, as the bees were festooning so heavily you could not see through the grafting frame. It was solid bees. I gently moved enough with a light breath to move them off about 4 cells enough to see the wax buildup. Will know more about Saturday, March 19. I...

Re: Almost Nectar Bound

Finally got to check them Sunday. They were looking really good. I broke out a queen rearing nuc yesterday and we plan to graft into it tomorrow. We are trying this method. Haven't tried it before. It seems like it would be simpler and easier than the cloak board. http://doorgarden.com/2011/11/07/sim...

I wanted to check hives yesterday, but an abscess and the dentist prevented it. Maybe this next weekend.

Re: Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

I opened two hives today. Brooding is ramping up. There were 8 or 10 bees on each side of each frame with baskets full of pollen, waiting to unload. It is coming in heavily.

Re: Bees Collecting Pollen Sub

Unless you plan to make nucs or sell packages, there is really no reason to use them. They are used to make more bees than a hive can handle and there needs to be a plan for the extra bees.

Re: Total loss of hive

The hands off approach hasn't worked since the mites arrived in the 1980's. Get your new bees from someone who will follow up with advice and mentorship if needed. Meaning a local person, business, or group. Then go into them every 2 weeks or more if signs of trouble appear. Check out the first 3 fo...

I am helping a member of another forum now. It is the first day of summer. He is in New Zealand. If I gave him advice for t...

Re: Combining Hive Question

With one frame of bees, I would do neither. I would dispose of the queen, wait a couple of hours, and shake them out in front of the receiving hive.
