Brood production has increased in my hives and disposition of the bees is fair.
Not seeing a lot of nectar coming in, the weather in my area isn't cooperating.
Overcast, cloudy, showers.

I hope Fall weather isn't going to be a repeat of Spring!

Before taking the practical you need to know....
how to light a smoker, remove the outer frame first,
recognize drone brood, drone, queen cell,
queen, worker cell, worker, honey,
capped and uncapped, and pollen.

Kurt decided to wait until September to give the practical test to give the beginners more time to familiarize themselves with the bees and working in a hive.

You didn't say how many full frames of honey you have in the 2nd supers. If the supers are almost full you may need to add another super for the fall flow! I try to leave the girls two full supers for overwintering. That may be more than needed but, I would rather they have more than needed than sta...

NOSEMA !

I know this is posted as a reply to another topic but, I think it's important everyone see it. My bees were tested for Nosema in mid June, 09. They were also tested for Varroa and tracheal mites. They were not showing any symptoms. The test was offered by state inspector Jack Hanel when he spoke at ...

I plan to start mite counts this week. I will be using Apilife Var on the hives that warrant treatment. Fall treatment threshold for varroa is 60-190 mites caught per 24 hrs. on count sheets. I did a powdered sugar drop on the hives below treatment threshold last year. After treatment I did a mite c...

Fall Flow!

The flow is getting under way here (Western NC). I set a syrup feeder about 50 ft from my hives and for the past two days the girls have not been interested in the syrup at all! Of course yellow jackets and ants are interested in it. I've seen what I believe to be Goldenrod blooming and, there is a ...

Andy,

The beekeeping class offered by Guilford County Beekeepers is, in my opinion one of the best in the state.

I truly enjoyed it.

After completing this class you will have the basic knowledge required to become a good beekeeper.

Good luck !

ski, thanks for sharing, That is a great picture of laying workers! I feel for the owner of that hive. :( I encountered the challenge of laying workers in June. Jacobs, I'm sorry I haven't been to the forum lately. So sad to hear about your nuc! Don't give up on nucs. I know it's no help now, but just for future reference I have used pure vinegar in a spray bottle to neutralize the different scents when combining bees from different hives. It worked for me....

Sorry I'm a little late replying to the question, I'm only a 2nd year beekeeper but, I over wintered two nucs last year with great success. I set both of the nucs up in Hives this spring and they are still doing good, both are strong hives. I believe it's important to go into winter with healthy bee...

Thanks Ski, I quickly wanted to be chasing someone elses bees too!
