Outstanding Customer Service

When you receive good customer service from a company, frankly you tend not to notice much because we expect good service. When you receive exceptional, outstanding service, well it stands out. Recently we purchased some Nucs from Valley Bee Supply in Fishersville, VA. When we got the Nucs back to o...

First use of Api Life VAR

This is the first season we have had Varroa counts high enough to need treatment. Our apiary is located just north of lake Jeanette in Guilford Co. and has 4 hives. We installed the first treatment of Api Life VAR pads according to the package instructions, (Each pad cut in to quarters and placed in...

Re: Piedmont honey prices

Kurt, I sold out of my 8oz jars at $5 per. Based on the demand I could have gotten more, but I have a loyal group of clients and I was still making a small profit.

Re: Attacked

My first season I watched my little Russian girls swarm and kill a European Hornet that was trying to enter the hive while I worked it. The swarmed the intruder, covering her. After about 15 min. the bees dispersed and the hornet was dead.

Re: too late for splitting hives

At my site in the Air Harbor area of Greensboro, I am seeing very few drones. I defer to the more experienced BKs here but I would not try to start a split this late.

Re: Harvesting

The question about the ATC or automatic temperature compensation is important. The refractive index is strongly dependant on temperature.
I have extracted frames with up to 15% uncapped. I do follow the shaking method described above and I havent had any problems.

Re: December 30, 2011 and bees are flying

I checked my hives earlier in the week to see how they were using pollen patties and to check on honey stores. They we not only flying but when I checked the super on top where I gave them honey back in November, they have started filling the empty cells with nectar. Locally we have cherry trees and...

We did a quick inspection today to see how the winter stores were looking. With the alternating bitter cold and warm days this winter I have worried that the bees are using up honey stores faster. It turns out that they still have honey stores in place. In addition, they were coming in with pollen. ...

My hives are in the Air Harbor area and we have several fields full of goldenrod. The bees have been bringing in pollen heavy for about 2 to 3 weeks. The nectar has been coming in more slowly. I have decided to go ahead and put on top feeders.

Looking for Russian Queens

I am interested in purchasing mated, Russian queens for the spring. Does the supplier who provided the Russian Nucs for 2009 also sell mated queens and if so how do I get in touch with them?

I checked my hives this afternoon. I have russians and have been feeding but slacked off this week. The girls are bringing in enough nectar that they are filling frames in the upper deep. I have two deeps and a medium super on each hive. The medium is all sugar water honey, and all frames are capped...

Kurt, Here is a follow-up question to Ron's. I have two hives of Russians. Both have two deeps and I have recently (two weeks ago added a medium super with foundation to each. Both seem to be doing well, but one is not doing as well as the other. Lets call the "slower" hive #1. Hive #2 has...

Russians, feeding and brood

OK, I am a brand new beekeeper, had my two Russian hives since May. According to everyone we asked, we had missed the flow so we began feeding for the summer. Well apparently I forgot to ask the bees! My girls have grown steadily in both number as well as resoucefullness. It took about 4 weeks for t...

Robbing event

I have had the russian bees in their new hives since noon on Saturday, (48 hours). Each hive has two deeps. I have the entrance reducer in with about a 3" entrance. Today I witnessed a huge amount of activity around one of the hives as I went out to do some yard work. I thought to myself, "...
