Re: Swarms-3/30/25
Looks like I have some that have moved into a swarm box. Noticed heavy scouting last week. When I looked yesterday (4/1/25) I saw a lot of traffic and noted one girl going in with pollen. Once they get settled I will make sure that isn't a marked queen that left my yard!

Re: Swarm - 04/01/2025
What in the world are they doing on the ground? Is that how you found them?

Re: Converting Manual Extractor to Motorized
If I remember correctly, I think it was around $600 for the upgrade on the extractor I have.

Re: Swarm preparation?
On March 19th I found three capped queen cells in one of my colonies. I am in Colfax. It was a colony that I was wanting to continue the genetics of, so I made a split using the cells. The next day, I thought, "You know, I probably should have checked all of those frames closer to ensure I didn...

Re: No Brood
I am in the Colfax area and the drones in my colonies are on the way. I had one colony with a few drones walking around looking lost. That colony, along with all the others, also has a lot of capped drone brood. They are on the way.

Converting Manual Extractor to Motorized
I have a 9 frame SAF Natura manual extractor. Obviously, you can order a motor for it and convert it to motorized. However, it is expensive! :D Has anyone come up with DIY ways to convert your manual extractors to motorized? I was thinking of mounting an electric drill to the crank-shaft, but I'm wo...

Re: Inspection observations
In regards to pollen.... I had some pollen sub out for open feeding just to see what they would do. Noticed recently that they are far more interested in some sugar syrup than the pollen sub. When inspecting, I noticed that they seem to have plenty of pollen so (as you said) they are definitely find...

Re: No Brood
I have brood in my five colonies but have not seen drones emerge yet. During my last inspections (2/24) I saw some random capped drone cells amongst the capped worker cells. However, there were just a few. I did noticed that it appeared they were getting the open drone cells nice and polished. I am ...

Reedyfork mentioned that he gets a lot from various YouTube channels. Would you mind sharing who some of your favorites are? I am always looking to expand my "diversity." The big ones for me lately are Bob Bennie, David Burns, Natures Image Farm, Jeff Horchoff (Mr. Ed), The Bee Supply.

Is it really "purple" honey?
I did hive inspections today (12/17/24). This time of year, I know we are not "supposed" to....but it was warm and I wanted to see what they were up to. In one colony, I thought the capped honey had a bluish/purple tint to it. Out of curiosity I tasted it and it was amazing! I even called ...

Re: Brood?
I am late to this discussion but found something interesting. I looked at the dates you posted and flipped open my beekeeping notebook. I did an inspection of my colonies on 10/24/24. I have six colonies and almost all of them I noted had little or no brood. So, sounds like all the honeybees around ...

Re: Honey Bottle Labels
This probably goes without saying....but since I was just doing some cost comparison I will share for others...... I found that the Avery website is very user friendly and lets you do label design on the site. Creating an account allows any "projects" you build to be saved for future order...

Honey Bottle Labels
Does anyone have a recommendation for a supplier of honey labels?
I have done the research to understand what is supposed to be on the label. I am just wondering if anyone on the forum has good/bad experience with any particular website or vendor.
THANKS!

Re: Small Hive Beetles
Does anyone on the forum recommend any "magic potions" to put in SHB traps? I am aware of the mineral oil, diatomaceous earth, and the Swiffer/Dixie towel trick. I have heard of poisons that can be put in the beetle barns so that the bees cannot get to it. Obviously, putting any poison/pes...

Re: Small Hive Beetles
reedyfork - you are not the only one! I think we are both in the "northwest corner" (I am in Colfax). My colonies are in full sun. I have never seen as many SHB as I did over the past month.

When is the Flow Over
Second year beekeeper here and wanting to learn what everyone looks for to determine that the flow is over. It seems that most talk about pulling supers off and extracting at the end of June and/or first week of July. I am assuming (like everything else in beekeeping) that this is dictated by the we...
