When is the Flow Over

Second year beekeeper here and wanting to learn what everyone looks for to determine that the flow is over. It seems that most talk about pulling supers off and extracting at the end of June and/or first week of July. I am assuming (like everything else in beekeeping) that this is dictated by the we...

Re: Adding a honey super

I had done what Jacobs recommended and found that one of my colonies is rapidly drawing combs on my medium super. It had new frames with wax foundation. I noticed today that one frame in the center had been drawn enough and had a couple cells of "liquid" in them. I am assuming that the &qu...

Re: Caught one!

It looks like I spoke too soon! Last night, I taped the hole on my bait box....pulled it down....moved it up to my yard.....and slowly pulled off the top....to find......ABSOLUTELY NOTHING! Apparently the bees I saw decided not to move in. I put it back on the tree this morning. Hopefully, the girls...

Re: Pinching queens to control swarming?

I am learning from your "conversation" here. Thanks for all the information. Since you all discussed making splits, I wanted to ask if you think I made a mistake. I made two splits from two different colonies. I ensured they had eggs/larvae/capped brood and food stores (nectar/honey and po...

Caught one!

I put a swarm box out on Monday and was planning on giving it a week before checking. It was so nice today that I walked down to take a look. Much to my surprise there are bees! I figured I would give them a few more days to ensure they are settled in. However, they seemed to be coming in and out fa...

Re: Japanese Beetles - bee safe options?

Thanks for the link. I had read other similar articles that proposed attempting trapping would only cause more beetles to come into the yard. We have got to get the chickens to work harder at eliminating them!

Japanese Beetles - bee safe options?

We need to get rid of Japanese Beetles in our yard. I have ordered a few of the Spectracide Bag-A-Bug traps. After ordering, I began wondering if they are safe for honeybees. I turned to Google first. I got the impression that they would be safe for the bees, but I know experience is the best teache...
