Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
I've gotta think about it. I really didn't want to risk losing those 4 mating nucs, and going through the mess of a cell builder/finisher for 4 queens (max) seems a little outta place. But at the same time I have been trying to get ahold of these genetics for three years . Let me think about it. If ...

Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
I think you missed the point Wally. I'm not saying NO ONE [/b] mates queens in August. Just that I [/b] don't mate queens in August. In my opinion, queens mated in CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA during a nectar dearth in July/August produces inferior queens. Poor nutrition combined with intense robbing pres...

Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
Yup. Not how I remembered it. I thought I was going to graft out of the hive, but when I showed up to look into the hive you told me I should just take a frame of larvae and put it into a 5 frame nuc and let them make e-cells from it (and cut the unwanted ones out if need be). When I asked how much,...

Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
What? Second time you called, I called back. Talked to you on the phone. We met up at one of your yards. Went through the hive. On March 31 you told me you were making a split the next day (a Tuesday) and I should come out. I said I was working, but would love to. If you could do it on a weekend, or...

Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
What a shame.
I've been trying for 3 years to get a Wayne's Bee queen (unsuccessfully).

Saw my first white eyed drone yesterday
I've read about them in bee genetics books, but never saw one until I was spot checking a hive yesterday. i noticed two drones chewing their way out. One had black eyes, one white eyes. Was able to snap a shot of it real quick. http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv54/JustinWKay/78F89301-88A7-472A-BF...

Re: Nuc Boxes
I assume you adjusted the dimensions appropriately, since you were using 3/4" plywood instead of 1/2" that DCoates' plans call for, right? Otherwise you'd have a hard time getting those frames in there ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Re: Successful Snow Day
Yeah, just trying to decide IF I want to sell them. I don't have any need for them today, or probably this year, but maybe next year. Is it worth having them sit around for a year . . . IDK. Depends on what they are worth. What's the going rate for an assembled shallow frame without foundation anywa...

Re: Successful Snow Day
Just heard back from Mann Lake. They'll be sending replacement frames to me today. Good work on their part, very pleased. Not to figure out what to do with the extra 100 frames I built. I could either: 1. Buy/build 10 more shallow boxes and buy 100 shallow sheets of foundation, or 2. Sell them to so...

Re: Successful Snow Day
Painting completed. Now to make the rest of the frames. All of the supers I ordered were mediums (20) and I ordered 200 medium frames and 200 sheets of medium foundation. I assembled 100 of the frames prior to assembling the boxes. Found out yesterday that 100 of the frames were actually shallow fra...

Re: Successful Snow Day
I build most of mine from lumber. I didn't plan ahead enough though, so these came from Mann Lake. Painting isn't as much of a PITA as it used to be. I got a spray gun to attach to the air compressor. It doesn't really save much in the way of time, but sure makes it easier, less monotonous, and easi...

Successful Snow Day
Work canceled, spent the day building equipment. 20 medium boxes, 15 deep boxes, 100 medium frames (so far). I call that a productive day. Now to just get them filled with bees . . . http://i669.photobucket.com/albums/vv54/JustinWKay/Mobile%20Uploads/2014-02/FBF47806-BF7F-43E1-A547-661516D8306A_zps8...

Re: Black comb
Is it black, or just darker?
Comb gets darker as it gets older. Starts off white, turns yellow, then yellowish brown, then brown, and eventually black. Nothing really wrong with it. Might want to put it to the outside frames, and rotate it out if you're worried about it though.

Dandelions
I know Phil saw his shadow today, but I was taking the pup for a walk and noticed (on two separate occasions) a dandelion in bloom. It's about 6 weeks too early (on average), even though this year appears to be moving slower than average, and these little weeds beat out the Red Maple, but still a go...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts
I would have lost a ton of hives if it wasn't for constant candy I've been putting on the hives. Some appear to be going through a 10" pie tin a week.

Re: Help needed
If you aren't treating for varroa, I'd say that's your problem. As far as my hives go, I had a few that were weak going into late fall (mainly due to some robbing). Rather than combine them, I decided to roll the dice and see if they made it. To date, all of those weak hives died out (5). Not surpri...

Just help me raise some queens and you can have part of them. You got yourself a deal. Let me know when you want to get started, and I'll be happy to come on down. PS. On the front page where you click on the forum, there is a new forum just under it. Worldwidebeekeeping.com. Check it out. Will do....
