Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
The trapout is going well. I would have responded sooner but out of town trips and computer problems have kept me off the internet. Trying to decide on a mother board for the new PC now. Did the queen come out? Most likely yes in my opinion. The first box I removed and the current hive at the church...

Re: Equipment Storage Question
I thought you could borrow the ladder truck when needed lol. It would be a great training exercise. I pulled a bunch of frames out this year and melted the wax down in the solar wax melter and am in the process of cleaning and reloading the frames with new wax. I don't like cleaning frames, its easi...

Re: Equipment Storage Question
I have been buying frames 100 at a time for a few years now and put them together as I think I will need them and have not had any problems with fit. I purchased the last group in the fall of 2011 and just put them together this week and the pieces fit just fine. I have purchased frames from Brushy,...

Honeybees in house (Jamestown) May 8th 2012
Saw this on Craigslist. We have two honeybee hives in the side of our house. We are planning to replace our siding in the next few months and would like them removed, but we don't want them killed and want them to go to a good home and be of some use to someone. If you have experience with bees and ...

Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
Checked the trapout today and there is normal light hive traffic with guard bees and foragers coming and going. Bees were exiting the cone at about one every 5 minutes. Much more calm then yesterday.

Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
I received a call from Larry the church contact today (Saturday) that there were a lot of bees hanging from the cone and on the hive. He also asked if I thought the queen had come out? By the time I changed out boxes and got home there was a light rain so I did not check for the queen or queen cells...

Re: Local bee group on Facebook
I have not been very impressed by Facebook as a beekeeping tool as it is not organized into categories, there is no search function and if it received a lot of posts it would just be one long scroll. I am going to stay with the regular forums for beekeeping as well.

Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
3 day check after cone was set. There were 4-5 frames of bees in the hive, a few bees around the base of the cone some traffic in and out of the hive. There was a steady stream of bees coming out the cone for the 20 minutes I was there watching. I had to look over the top of the hive to see the righ...

Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
I set the trapout up today with Jo and Jeff's help but I went out a few days ago and closed their entrance down to about a foot wide so it would be inside the cone box and I left an old box there for them to fly into so they would be away from the stain glass window. http://i173.photobucket.com/albu...

Re: Trapout Gibsonville Church
During the cold snap I built a cone for the trapout. Joe and I tried it out before I put the face board and cone on and the fit was not too bad, some caulk and maybe some weather striping and we may be good to go. Larry from the church built a platform and it is on site. Just need to coordinate a ti...

The Web sites back!
Rob,
a BIG thank you to you and Charles for getting the home page and web site back up. I know a lot of stuff happens behind the scenes without us users ever knowing. Anyway, Thank You

Trapout Gibsonville Church
Going to do a trapout with Joe and Jeff from the 2012 Guilford County beekeeping class. The trapout will be at a church about 3 miles from my house. So far have done a site survey, and got some pictures and will start on a cone. Also waiting for a platform to be built by the church maintenance guy. ...

I have also used the cedar chips and maybe it was just the way i used them, but I thought my smoker as well as the smoke seemed much hotter then when I used burlap.

Re: Supercedure cells in new hive
"If the cells are empty do I scrape them off or just let them handle it?"
If the cells are empty and just part of a queen cell or a queen cup, leave them alone, hives old and new build queen cups and tear them down. Its kind of like practice for queen cells when they need them.

Re: Bees that can not fly
Its most likely an old bee as Jacobs has described, the other possibility is tracheal mites. But if you only have one or just a few bees walking around then its not a problem that you need to treat. Tracheal mites get into the bees breathing passages so they cannot breathe very well and cannot fly. ...

Re: April 03, 2012 Swarm
Thanks Wally, I wish it didn't come out of my hive lol. I helped a 2nd year beek in Gibsonville get one about the size of #3 out of a cedar tree just before dark on Friday that was about 15 foot up. Sent an 8 year old up the ladder to shake the branch so the bees would fall into the bucket on a pole...

Re: Ratios and other neat calculations
Rob,
I think its already a sticky under News and Info but it would not hurt to have it in more then one spot.
A big tool sticky is a great idea, "Big Tool Sticky" sounds like a good title. Well maybe not. lol.
