Re: feeding peppermint candy

Just my thoughts. Don't know what others have done but I feel that its just like anything else that we feed our bees. If you know where the candy was made, how the candy was made and what went into the candy and you are good with all of that then feed it. You can buy sugar for 50 cents a pound, is i...

Re: Bees outside hive after Apiguard

I used Apiguard for 3-4 years but not in the last 3 years.
I do recall some bearding but not to that extant.

Maybe they don't like being upside down. :)

Would also like to see another pic now that the temps are in the 70's and the bees have had time to acclimate.

Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

I have not seen any larvae or pupae outside the hive and during the sugar rolls I shook bees from the brood frames and they looked ok.
So I have not seen anything abnormal so far.

Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

I treated my home yard and the two out yards with OAV. The home yard had 3 treatments but the third treatment was 10 days after the second which I think accounts for the high mite counts I got during sugar rolls. Hive # 1 mite count - 16 Hive # 3 mite count - 13 Hive # 4 mite count - 0 Hive # 5 mite...

Re: Not expanding to new frames...bees possibly forming a un

Matt, I think you are correct, it is a work slow down. The last month has been hot and dry and not much for the bees to forage on so they stay home and beard and line dance. You may not need that 3rd box if the 2nd box does not have 7 or 8 frames drawn out. The bees will only draw comb out if there ...

Prescription required for certain bee related drugs

Got this from the Bee Culture daily E-mail: The only one I have tried to use was the Fumagilin B and by the time I got it there was a flow on and the bees didn't take it. But they did just fine without it. From I. Barton Smith, Entomologist, USDA Honey Bee Research Lab, Beltsville, MD On December 11...

Nice write up Rob, maybe you should have a weekly or monthly column on beekeeping.

Becky, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

Unless we had 60-70 of them not sure it would be worth it.
Anyway there are quite a few folks making them and I am not interested in a Job right now.

Re: Oxalic Acid Vaporizer

Finally got my two home made OA vaporizers wired, assembled and tested. The sheet metal below the aluminum block keeps the vaporizer from scorching wood on solid bottom boards. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45/Beegood_01/vaporizer/IMG_3501_zpss5qvsdbi.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w45...

Handtruck for Honey Supers

At one of my outyards I am only able to drive to within 50-75 yards of the hives. So I have been carrying medium honey supers a good 50 yards. That will let you know what kind of shape you are in in a hurry. I have been looking at different kinds of hand trucks for carrying supers and maybe a hive b...

Oxalic Acid approved in North Carolina

From The Brushy mountain web site: We have mentioned that Oxalic Acid has been approved by the EPA; however for it to be used legally it must be registered in the individual states and have the appropriate label. It has been a process but we are working to have all states approved. Currently North C...
