Re: Comment NOW on Registering Oxalic Acid for Varroa Contro

Re: And then there were none...only questions remain
Can’t argue with anything Rob said, but I might do things a bit different. 4 frames of honey and pollen would be the same but I might put 3 frames of drawn comb and a frame of foundation or maybe just a starter strip. I like seeing comb being drawn. I would also feed and when they back fill 2 frames...

Similar situation here, the bees have been cleaning out the bucket of brewers yeast mixture but today they took maybe half.

Re: Survivors?
I added a box over the shim and mountain camp sugar, took the 2 supers of stores from the dead out and spread the frames out over a few other hives that were not light but lighter then the others. I scored the capped honey so maybe they will empty the frames.

Re: Survivors?
L&H I investigated the one hive that I have lost so far and it appears that it was a small cluster maybe about the size of a softball on a small patch of brood. They starved near the patch of brood. There were 2 supers of stores above them, frames of stores beside them and some below them. They ...

Bird feeders may help, plastic owls may also deter birds. Harbor Freight sells plastic owls for $15.

Re: Survivors?
I did not pull frames or boxes on any hives. I went by activity at the entrance a knock on the side with an ear against the hive listening for a BUZZZZZ and a quick look under the telescoping cover to check on the mountain camp sugar. A lot of cold nights ahead so not in a hurry to tear the hive apa...

Re: Hive Placement in Small Back Yard
I have never had a problem with the 8 hives in my back yard while mowing right up to the bottom board. On the other hand there are many times that they have let me know that they do not like the weed eater, sometimes they attack my hands and sometimes just the spark plug wire on the weed eater. When...

9 out of 10 are doing well so far.
One of what I thought was a stronger hive is gone.

Re: Question for Discussion Insulated bee hives
I also have not wrapped any hives in my 8 years of beekeeping. There was an experiment someone documented in the Beesource forum that compared unwrapped to wrapped hives. If I remember correctly they did not have bees just hives with temp probes. Again, if I remember correctly they found that wrappi...

Re: clump of bees under hive on this warm day
Mike,
That's an interesting thought. But I would have expected to hear about fighting or dead bees if it was robbing. But looking inside to make sure there is a cluster sure makes sense.

Re: clump of bees under hive on this warm day
I would check to see if there is a queen in that group. If no queen I would dump them back into the hive you think they may have come from.
If you find a queen I would have done the same thing you did by putting them in a nuc and maybe adding some house bees from another hive with a frame of honey.
