Multiple Swarms?

So, how many times can a hive swarm? We had two hives until late March when one of them swarmed. We captured it and had three hives. Then Easter Sunday the other original hive swarmed, we captured that, and now we have 4 hives. Last week we saw another swarm (can't figure out which hive it came from...

Brood Questions

We have one hive that hasn't taken any pollen cake (it's not used and all dry). We went into the brood chamber and found what appeared to be fresh capped cells (which we figure were drones because they were larger) and saw some white brood in similar large but open brood cells. There were lots of ol...

Trial and error

Thanks, JC. As y'all could tell, we did everything mostly by trial and error. As for your question - I noticed the swarm around 11am, and we don't think it had been there when we were out earlier (7:30) but who knows. By the time spouse got home, there were bees flying all over - in the carport, aro...

Wow! First swarm

Bees really like to keep us in our lowly human place, don't they? Here's a long story about our first swarm (today, 3/23), followed by some questions. I heard the noise first, then saw this huge living wad hanging in the filbert tree near the other two hives. Of course, I immediately grabbed my came...

Whoops - I had looked for classes and programs under "Coming Clases" on the site but it was under construction and I didn't click on the "Beginners" link until after I posted my question. Drats - dumb again! Oh well. Maybe it should say - beginners click here for classes. sorry. B

Classes for beekeeping?

I have been so enthusiastic about my learning experience with bees that some friends are eager to learn how to begin. With our 'enormous' experience of having only 2 hives for not quite a year (!), we are definitely not qualified to tutor anyone! So what classes/programs can I refer them to? I hear ...

Honey anxiety

Gosh, when you passed around the pale honey last night, I really felt like a dumb newby (hey, that term is even funnier in this forum!). Maybee I should borrow one of the group's videos to learn more. Extracting honey is not exactly something we're prepared for! We just keep adding supers - it's beg...

8) Thanks for the advice. You're right, we got 2 nucs with 4 frames each that we put into 10 frame hives. We were worried that the queen had fallen to the bottom of the hive in one of them and didn't know if that was bad or not. They are going through a lot of the nutrient solution, we've seen lots ...

New beekeepers need answer!

We just got 2 hives w/nucs 2 weeks ago. One hive seems to be doing fine, but the other has bees clustered at the bottom of the opening. They seem to be working and drawing out the combs, but the cluster is blocking the entrance. Should we be concerned?

Any suggestions?
