Re: Jan & Feb Feeding
The reason we want to feed is that we lost 2 hives last year and think it was due to lack of food and the very cold winter. It could have been to a combination of those and condensation. Think we will try the granulated sugar on the news paper this weekend while the temperatures are warmer. The spli...

Jan & Feb Feeding
We have one of those Styrofoam hive top feeders and are getting ready to start feeding but are wondering if the sugar water will still freeze, and if so what temperature will it freeze at. We know it depends on what concentration the sugar is, should we feed 2 to 1 or 2 to 2?

Re: Inspection & Manipulation HELP/Summerfield
It's been a month since Marc's visit. Success!!! The split was a tremendous success thanks to Marc's help. Evidence of brood in both colonies and no more swarm cells. They are packing in the honey now, both hives are running neck and neck and are still very docile. Thanks Marc!!!

BeeMax top hive feeder and general
Does anyone have any experience with the BeeMax top hive feeders? I started feeding yesterday and checked this morning. The bees can't get the syrup fast enough. Observation inside the hive yesterday was patchy capped honey around the brood, very little. 2 frames in the super above capped on one sid...

Blueberry juice
This past year only, we have noticed our honeybees feeding on our field of cracked blueberries right on the plant. I noticed the fig posting and wondered if this was bad for the bees also. They were not foraging on the ones that dropped from the plants until none were left on the bush. We collected ...

Nosema treatment?
Checked our hives today and found 2 hives with nice stores but are obviously using their own honey now. Our captured swarm has next to nill, dangerously low from our last check on July 14th. Just a few patchy areas of honey surrounding the brood. Brood pattern excellent though. cooking up the sugar ...

Re: Mite A Way Quick Strips for sale
Thanks for saying so, but I only have 2 hives and probably won't treat this year. Like I said, I'm not interested in making money, just looking to help others out like myself who are doing bees for hobby. We have a blueberry farm and 2 hives in which the bees are doing a fine job of staying close to...

Re: Mite A Way Quick Strips for sale
So sorry everyone. I purchased 20 strips for 44.25 in the fall of last year. I used 4 and have 16 on my hands. I am not out to make money, just want to get rid of them. I have 8 treatments to offer at $6.00 per treatment. That's $3.00 per strip. You must pick them up, I will not deliver at that pric...

Dead Bees
This morning I walked out to look at the activity of my hives. Bees flying in and out, but how normal is it at this time of year to have dead bees in front of the hives with pollen on their legs? We've had 2 mornings of heavy frost and some cold weather here in Summerfield, but would that cause this...

Re: MiteAway Quick Strips
We went ahead and treated our 2 hives shortly after my last post and when conditions were right. We wound up with hundreds of dead bees and thousands of dead mites. The bee mortality was disheartening. We didn't remove the strips until 14 days. The bees seemed stressed enough. After 14 days, we insp...
