Re: honey collection

Is anybody harvesting their honey supers yet, this is my first year that I'm getting honey (wooohoo) I don't want to pull them off to early but I don't want to le s 've them on to long. Is there a good rule of thumb? The nectar flow is over correct?

Re: above the queen excluder

I put mine on then an empty 9 frame shallow super once this was filled with honey with mostly capped, I then added a 9 frame deep since I had frames with drawn comb. From what I read, the queen excluded keeps the queen out of your honey supers so no eggs, brood larva just honey. I'm hoping I'm corre...

Re: First Hive Inspection of 2014

Don't let them run out. With 20,000 new mouths to feed, they can starve in 2 to 3 days. You might consider combining them if the population count is low. They are bringing in pollen, I've seen the queen & some drones now. But the last time I looked the bottom deep was slam packed with capped ho...

Re: swarming

Not sure if this is the right place or not, I did an inspection of my hive today, I have a screened bottom board and a entrance reducer then a deep brood box and another deep above that then a medium super. Checking the way I went in, the medium super had bees eating the sugar brick and pollen patty...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

Paul, from the bee calendar the green might be red or silver maple, yellow it says willow I went ahead and put some pollen patties in both of my hives last week on top of the sugar bricks; if they wanted it they could have it. I need to learn the hive tip method for weight that’s for sure. I did a q...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

Just checked my two remaining hives this morning at 1130. The temp was 47 and the Wayne's Bees hive was foraging heavily, bringing in a lot of bright yellow pollen, probably camellia. Tipped the hive earlier in the morning and it still seemed pretty heavy. Paul Paul, good to know your Waynes were o...

Re: First Hive Inspection of 2014

Looking good, guys. Try to check them again this month and weekly in march if you haven't been hefting them. If you have, and the weight is good, hefting weekly is all that is needed. Wally, mine is light on both hives that's why I've been feeding sugar bricks, I can lift / tilt the back with ease....

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

thanks to all I have dropbox so let me see if I can figure it out there. If the weather gets to be somewhat nice I'll add a little bit of pollen patty in each and keep an eye on it and add more if necessary, then hopefully a nicer day coming I can check the hives better than what I've been able to d...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts

I've seen the girls bringing in pollen but I haven't gone completely in the hives for inspection since the rain, cold, snow and wind. I just open the top and look at the top frames where I've placed my sugar bricks. Since they are bringing in pollen on the some what warm days, should I bypass any ad...

Re: Help needed

[quote="ski"]Mike, Its wishful thinking that this is the last cold snap before spring. Usually gets nice for a few weeks in February then we get another surprise dip in temperatures. I was sort of hoping the next few days would be it but it looks like another front coming in on Sunday and ...

Re: Help needed

My hive has a screened bottom. With the freezing temperatures we're having, now I am wondering if I should've used a thin board under the screen as herbcoop mentioned. What do some of you seasoned beeks recommend? Thanks, in advance, for any info posted. I could be wrong but I think Wally uses soli...

Re: Help needed

This year I have made sure they had plenty of sugar water until they didn't take any more, large hive and a small one (I thought this one, small hive would have died already) The large is Wayne bees I bought off Wally and the small is a split off that one, so no treatment at all. The hives started g...
