Swarm - 04/01/2025

Post by MadItalian »

Howdy...

Found another swarm in my backyard this afternoon. I couldn't find the queen, but got everyone in an empty full frame hive with brood comb. Moved them to my apiary when they looked calmed down and gave them sugar water.

I'll check them again tomorrow. This swarm appeared to be half the size of the last swarm. And most likely from one of my existing hives. Not sure which yet.

I picked up this one yesterday afternoon(4/1/25) in Greensboro. I estimate it at 2lbs.

What in the world are they doing on the ground? Is that how you found them?

When I got the call, the homeowners were describing bees in the air, on the low branch of a tree, and then in the air. While I was trying to figure out what they were describing, they discovered the bees had left the branch and were now on the curb. When the queen has trouble flying, she will land wherever she can. When it is on the ground, the bees will gather with her like in the photo.
