queens again

Post by Kurt Bower »

I will be purchasing around 20 queens in the next couple of weeks.
I am unsure where I will be getting them from but may choose a local source. If anyone needs an additional queen, just let me know.

Re-queening

Do you re queen every year? If so, what are the major benefits?

Hi Ron:

I requeen as needed which seems to be every year.
I am actually getting ready to make some splits so I need queens.
Requeening every fall is supposed to insure a viable queen going into spring. This allows for greater egg laying, less swarming due to a higher pheremone output and higher honey production.
Well worth the $12-15.

Are you going to try any of the Russian Bees again?

I have no real preference at this point.
I run a variety of queens types.
Due to moving my yards around, I would not be able to keep the Russian's together which defeats the purpose. Russians need to stand alone in order to see the mite resistant benefits.

I will be acquiring a few queens in the next week or so.
I will be bringing back my bees from Virginia (they have been on vacation) and more than likely, one will need requeening.

Let me know if I can pick any up.
