August meeting

Post by Kurt Bower »

I have recently got word that there has been some progress made in the Colony Collapse disorder. Apparently there is ongoing research into a highly suspected cause.
Our own Olav Rueppell "Professor of Biology at UNCG" will tell what he knows at the upcoming meeting next Tuesday, August 14.

I really enjoyed him in the bee class. I always say I will make it but never do....so I will say can't bee there and we will see what happens.

Olav told me that the initial findings are pointing towards a virus.

Olav quotes

"That means, this virus (and it is not clear what kind until we see the publication) has been found in a lot of the CCD colonies, and probably not a lot in healthy colonies. Does not prove causality but it is a hint that this virus could be involved.
This is all I know and I could also not get more out of Dave Tarpy who was involved in this study and should know more. Until its published they have to be a little secretive about their results. Anyway, the bottom line is that, if it is a virus, you should try to keep your bees as isolated as possible and not move them around too much. Kind of like you should behave to avoid the flu, when there is an epidemic".
