Nosema Cerane

Post by ski »

Received the paragraph below from a full time bee keeper in Georgia.
Is anybody here in NC treating for nosema cerane as a preventative treatment before any symptoms appear?

The nosema ceranae must be dealt with now. This single cell bacteria from
India builds during late spring and summer with a resulting colapse of
the hive in late summer. Fumigillin-B is the treatment. I used a 50%
formic acid with 10% Honeybeehealthy in shop towels to treat for mites
two weeks ago. Found two hives queenless as a result- one of thes was a
newly introduced queen. Mites have dimished.

No. Not suppose to treat until it is a problem....right? That would lead to a resistance build up.

If my info is correct, that strain of nosema is "thought" to be the cause of CCD. Not proven, just thought.

I am not a migratory beek, so I don't fear CCD in my hives at this time. If it does become a hobbyist concern, I will still wait until they know for sure that it is the cause, and it is in this area, before I will begin treating, if I start at all.
