moving bees

Post by drewgrim »

i moved my hives about 75-100' last night across the yard because i have to do some painting where they were. but this morning they seem to all be returning to the old location. it seems that as with most things bee related they will probably correct themselves. but just curious if there is anything that i can do to help them find their new hive location. any ideas?

I think they will fly around in the next day or two and find their way home or take up with other hives if you have more around. At least I think that is what Wally says. If you are moving short distances and are really concerned about most of the bees finding that specific hive, then I think you need to shut the bees in (screen the entrance closed) in the evening when the bees are in and move them to the new spot. Keep them closed in for 3-4 days so that most will re-orient when they go out. There will always be a few who are like me and have no sense of direction and will insist on returning to the original location.
