A Winter Pollen Snack

Post by ski »

I put a few handfuls of pollen sub out yesterday and the bees seemed to be excited about it today. They carried off most of what I put out yesterday. The pollen sub was home made from 1 part soy flower, 1 part sugar and 8 parts brewers yeast from Wally. Wally thanks for getting a good supply of brewers yeast I will want to purchase more before spring.

Glad to see it's working. I'll be putting some out after the cold front goes through later this week.

Jan 27...48 degrees F.
The bees were out collecting the pollen substitute again today. I also put in a chip of rock salt to see if they had any interest and they seem to be all over it. But, I am not sure if they were trying to gather the salt or just using it as a place to clean up before heading back to the hive. Anybody have any thoughts?

Where's a good place to buy soy flour and brewer's yeast? Earth Fare?

I'm going to make some today and put it out tomorrow when it's going to be quite warm.

Don't know where you are located

The Brewers yeast I got from Wally.

Since the mixture is only 1 part soy flower I purchased it from the grocery store in 1.5 lb bags.

The sugar can be ground in the blender as Rob Jacobs has mentioned in past posts. I used some of the pharmaceutical sugar that the club sold last year its very fine and white so I just added it without any grinding.

Its fun to watch the bees coming in and gathering the mixture.

I just bought 3 of the 1.5 pound bags of soy flour at Wal Mart. It's in the section with the regular flour and for the same thing was about $2.00 a bag cheaper than Harris Teeter. I'm going to be making up more of the brewers yeast, soy flour & sugar mix. My hives have taken about 3 lbs of the 10 lbs I made and are still going nuts for it.

Larry Tate has also advertised brewers yeast here in the "For Sale" section, he is out towards Winston Salem. So there is one source east and one west.

I know this picture is pretty much like the others but as Rob said they are going nuts for the mixture.
