April 03, 2012 Swarm

Post by ski »

Well I did not get to about 4 hives the last couple of weeks to open up the brood nest and a quick check today showed 4 hives with swarm cells, nectar filled brood chambers and this nice swarm.
They were about 5 foot off the ground so I set the hive on the ladder shook the branch and in they went. They have since been put in nice new equipment and went off to live at a neighbors house.

But not the same size. Beautiful swarm there, Ski.

I shook one from a peach tree Thursday for a lady beek. They must like peach trees.
Shook one from a Mulberry tree today.

Thanks Wally,
I wish it didn't come out of my hive lol.

I helped a 2nd year beek in Gibsonville get one about the size of #3 out of a cedar tree just before dark on Friday that was about 15 foot up. Sent an 8 year old up the ladder to shake the branch so the bees would fall into the bucket on a pole. lol Got most of them that way then cut the branch off and shook the rest of them into the hive. Getting dark rain clouds in the area, bees were not happy. But we got them in the hive.
Just some thoughts.

Glad to hear of everyone's swarm success this year!

I put up a bait hive in my back yard, as a hail mary play. I'll be darned if one didn't move right in about a week ago.

I moved it, and put another right in it's place. Here's hoping for a second, lol.
