Nuc to med box

Post by ski »

I was considering using all medium boxes for my hives. I don't have bees yet but have 2 deep, 2 med and 2 shallow boxes with frames and foundation.

If I want to only use medium boxes how do I deal with a nuc that comes with deep frames?

Thanks, :)

The easiest way is to start with one deep and add only mediums.
After the queen is laying in the medium, place a queen excluder between her and the deep. After 24+ days, remove the deep box.
It will take most of the summer to complete.

Hey Wally,

Thanks for the answer. :)
I see that would be the easiest way.

If I removed the deep box I would loose the brood pollen and some stored honey in that box.

I am still going around in circles as to how to set up the hives.

My plan for today is to use only deeps in one hive and only mediums in the other.
The deep hive would have 4.9mm foundation in the bottom two boxes and maybe one empty frame in each box to let them build want they want. The third deep box when needed would be 5.2 mm foundation.
I know the deeps will be heavy. At least maybe some day .

THe medium hive would be the same way but with medium boxes.

Maybe I can but the nuc in the deep hive and buy something else for the mediun hive.

Any comments would be helpfull :?

You can do as above, then when you remove the deep, position it on the hive in a way for the bees to empty it.
You can also start the nuc in one side of the deep and block off the other side. That way, they have to move up to the medium immediately, rather than filling out 5 more deep frames.

Thanks Wally,

You guys always seem to have a work around. I think that's how you know a good beekeeper, no matter how bad a newbee wants to or has screwed something up the experienced guys know how to work around it. lol thats cool

I have made a decision on how I am going to set up the hives. I am going to use a deep on the bottom and the rest will be medium boxes. Maybe if I do both hives this way I will have some interchangeability. I am going to start out using 4.9mm in the deep and first medium and see how it goes.

Thanks for your input its always good to get a second view on things.

Thanks,
