Swarm-8/1/15

Post by Jacobs »

David got a swarm call about honey bees apartment hunting off Old Oak Ridge Road. The photo e mailed to him were definitely honey bees. We vacuumed what appeared to be around 3lbs of bees. They had started to build a small amount of comb and it had a few eggs in it. We have hived them up and they are unsettled, but hopefully the queen is still in the hive and the bees in the air up high will work their way back down to the hive.

I wish you luck. I hived a swarm Thursday evening, just to watch them depart in about 10 minutes. They settled on a low branch, so we waited until nearly dark to put them back in the hive. It worked, they all went in. Carried them home.

Friday morning, I carried a jar of sugar water and a feeder out to them.

NOT ONE BEE IN THE BOX. Haven't seen them since.

These bees have stayed put. I haven't seen much in the way of pollen going into the hive. In a day or two, David and I will check the frames and see what the bees are up to.
