Swarm-4/28/18

Post by Jacobs »

I got a call late this afternoon about a swarm a little bigger than a softball 10 feet up in a tree. I shook them into my swarm bucket and saw the queen on the outside of the bucket top. She flew back up to the tree and I got her by hand and put her in the bucket. I hived them in a 5 frame medium nuc with room to spare.

On a swarm that small could that be a queen taking a rest stop back from her mating flight?

That thought never occurred to me, but it did look like scouts were flying out and back to the cluster. It was behaving like a swarm in search of a home.
