Swarm 6/8/2020

Post by quentin »

Medium to large swarm this morning about 9:30 AM. guessing around 4-5 pounds, This swarm was from a hive in my yard that was a previous swarm earlier in the year. Came through winter with 3 hives, split 2 of them early March, for 5 total. One capture from a local residence, total 6, Four swarm captures from my yard, total of 10. Sold one, total of 9. Suspect I missed 1-3 swarms from my yard early on in the season, late Feb-early March.

That would be called a maiden swarm according to "Historical Beekeeping Articles" A swarm from a swarm in the same year

Swarms from the same colony come in this order

1 Prime swarm - 2 cast swarm- 3 colt swarm-4 filly swarm

Checked the hive two days ago, no brood, maybe that is what is meant by maiden swarm?
