Are we past the need to feed?

Post by Ron Young »

A question that hopefully will help the beginner, and all who wonder.

With the blooming of the Pear Trees, Red Buds, and a bit of clover, and dandilion, "Are we past the need to feed"?

I am going to say for me personally, I am past the need. I inspected my bees on the 9th and had two that were busting out, and I added the second deep to them. The other two, wintered moderately, but on inspection today, capped, developing, and eggs everywhere. Starting to see fresh nectar in the cells as well that was not their on the 9th. So, unless it turns off cold, and they can't fly for a few days, I do not need to feed.

It takes going in to look and see to be sure. (Wally, I am finally starting to get the hang of this, thanks for your help over the years..)

I stopped my external jar feeding about 2 weeks ago. On current inspections I am seeing fresh nectar being stored in outside frames that do not have capped honey from last winter. I am seeing large amounts of brood in the hives, but unless there is an extended period of rain/significantly cooler weather, I think they will be fine as far as food stores go.
