I got a call this morning and rushed over to beat the drizzle/rain that was starting and found a jumpy, ill tempered swarm. I took a few hits on the face while vacuuming it. The homeowner said they did not see it yesterday when they left for work, but it was there yesterday evening when they returned home. Based on the way it acted after I hived it--little fanning, bees flying out and gathering in clumps at various places in my yard--I suspect it may be queenless. That may explain why the bees spread out they way they did on the tree trunk and were not very deep at any point. That, being lower on food, and the unstable weather may explain their temperament. I should have taken a veil.

My 8 ft off the ground swarm turned out to be 12 ft up. Good thing I had a 10 ft step ladder. About 4.5 lbs bees and I found the queen on top the ladder after I dumped most the bees in the boxes. Thanks for the referral Rob

You are welcome Mike. I'm not sure why I am getting Alamance County calls and gave the information about a Church Street swarm to one of our GCBA swarm catchers. She called me back to say the address did not match Greensboro, but was in Burlington. I didn't even think about asking for the city when the caller named the street. Oops.
