Has the poplar flow started yet.
Has the poplar flow started yet.
Has the poplar flow started yet? I have one tree in my back yard that has low limbs on it that I can look at, but the buds are not open yet. I do live in a lower area, and things typically do not put out here as quick as they do a mile or so up the street. I guess 75-150 ft. elevation makes a bit of a difference.
Tulip Poplar Bloom
I have looked at the tree in my yard and every thing that I have looked at that could have been a bloom, is just opening up to be more leaves. I don't recall ever seeing a bloom on a poplar tree. I have looked on the internet to find some photo's of blooms, and can truly say that I have never seen anything remotely close to what I found. Can anyone report on how the poplar bloom is doing in this area????
Here is what I found when I did a search for Tulip Poplar Bloom.

Is it possible that the tree in my yard is not old enough to bloom? I have never seen blooms on it and it is over ten years old.

Just looked at a tree in the neighboring yard to the station
I just looked at a tree in the yard next to the fire station, and saw what I thought were blooms. I got the binoculars out, and yes, it looks like the image I found on the internet. I have never seen anything like that on my tree! However, I also have a locust tree, that has never bloomed. I will look in the woods around my house with binoculars in the am, and see what the deal is with the larger trees. The one in my yard is only 30 ft. or so high.
How much longer will the poplar last
How much longer do you think the poplar will last? Are the bloom dates on the whats blooming now link on the state web site accurate??
What a difference a few days will make
Wow, what a difference a few days will make. I got the chance to peak into the one good hive I have and see what was going on in the honey supper. I now have nectar being stored in all ten frames, and I would not be surprised to see some capping going on by the weeks end.
If they have things capped on 85-90% by the middle of next week, is there enough time left in the flow to add a second honey supper?? IF so, and I add a second supper, do I need to pull frames 1 and 10 in the full supper into the center, so the bees will continue to fill and cap them?

Lookes like it is over
Well, at least around here, it looks like the poplar flow is over. It did not last as long as the state link says it does. I guess things are off a bit because of the cold weather and the lack of rain. I have one honey super that is fully drawn and not capped. It looks like they may be starting to cap, so I guess they may finish it out.
After the poplar, is the remaining flow for the year minimal?
What is everyone else seeing?
