First official swarm of 2008

Post by Kurt Bower »

I received the first official swarm call on Easter Sunday. Apparently the swarm actually moved onto the property on Saturady but I was not made aware until Sunday.
Naturally I was not home and so I have no idea who got it.
Should be plenty to go around this year.

L&H,
The swarm list was sent around the meeting room for people to sign and indicate what areas they would cover if / when swarm calls come in to Kurt. Its never too late to sign up.

As long as you are a paid member of Guilford County beekeepers the swarm list is open to you!
Please forward me your name, phone # and zones of interest. Please refer to http://www.guilfordbeekeepers.org/swarm.html for your choice of zones.

speaking of swarms. Do bee hives attract swarms ? I had two brood chambers in reserve and unused, one a spare, one for 3lbs from Brushy Mountain later this month.

Yesterday I came home and the neighbor had probably 5 lbs of bees which I grabbed and almost filled a brood chamber. Today, a blue bird box in my yard had another swarm. I check my hives and don't think they swarmed. Plenty of room in them and plenty of bees.

They are coming from somewhere.

Yes, bees are known for swarming to the area of other hives.
