Swarm Lure Question

Post by Ron Young »

I was wondering, having had 4 swarms from 2 hives this year. Does having a swarm lure in an empty hive in your bee yard encourage swarming?
I was fortunate enough to be at home when the swarms issued, and retrieved all four. (I would much rather keep them from swarming, and hope to not have swarms next year) Hoever, in the event that I do, I was thinking that a swarm lure might help.
Three of the swarms that I captured this year were very high up in a poplar tree. I was wondering, if I had an empty hive, with a swarm lure in it, if any swarms next year would enter that hive and save me some work? On the other hand, I did not want to put one out if its presence would encourage swarming.
Any thoughts?
