What is in my hive.

Post by Ron Young »

I have a question, and when the weather gets a bit better than right now, I will accompany my question with a photo. I have a bunch of bugs in the top of my hive, all hanging out on the inner cover and on the bottom of the top. They look like a long beatle, and they have a funny little pincher on their tail. It almost looks like the pincher should be the head of the beatle, but it is clearly the tail end. Any ideas what they are, and are they harmful?

Possibly earwigs?
As far as I know thy do not do any damage, they just look like they would.

Per the web site below.
It’s appearance is very intimidating but they are in fact herbivores.

That is what is in my hive. I don't know where they are coming from. I just know that they are there.

Everyone I know around here has had loads of them for the last two years. They seem to have exploded in population after the drought year. I'm constantly dumping them out of my inner covers and out of the deep I have out as a swarm lure. I sure wish I could find a market for them because I could just about make up packages of them.
