The Jewish elbow

The Jewish Elbow A Jewish grandmother is giving directions to her grown grandson who is coming to visit with his wife. "You come to the front door of the apartment. I am in apartment 301. There is a big panel at the front door. With your elbow, push button "301". I will buzz you in. C...

Re: Environmental Center

Be careful Ed. Remember, Guilford County has a leash law. """The leash law in Guilford County says an animal kept on less than one acre of land must be restrained by a leash or a fence. On land larger than one acre, an animal can roam free; but it has to stay on its owner's property.&...

Re: Environmental Center

The last time I was there, a few years ago, they had a colony in the walls of the main building. I don't know if they ever had them removed. Maybe they are them, and they had them put in a hive.

Re: Found dead queen in introductory frame

My guess is you are correct. I have never waited to introduce a queen after removing the old queen or making a split. I put her in immediately, then release after 4 to 7 days if they haven't done it.

I only bagged them first to prevent leakage. Either way would work if the wife didn't shoot you for honey drippings all over her freezer and floor.

Re: Introduced queen flies away when released

I would say, bare minimum, 72 hours. I leave them 7 days in a candy cage and let them eat the candy out. With a release cage, 3 to 7 days would be my thoughts.

90% chance she came back.

Also, 90% chance they killed her after only 26 hours.

Re: Queen Excluders

I never use an excluder. The bees store honey above and around the brood. If they don't have enough stored above the brood to fill a super, I don't take it. That means, I wait until the super is full of honey before I rob. Otherwise, I leave what is there for the bees.

Re: Queens

Yes, they will tear them down and possibly kill the new queen because of the disturbance. It is best to just wait for 2 weeks after the estimated time of the new queen emerging and look for eggs. You can make up a couple nucs or a queen castle with the cells and let them emerge. Then introduce if ne...

Re: swarm traps - to spray or not to spray?

Opinion only. Spraying IN the trap is too strong. Once a month on the outside would be enough. NO to your question. Once they are checking it out, the smell is no longer needed.

Yes. If the queen fails to leave with them, they return. They will leave again within a day or two. It's time to make a spit.....ASAP.

Pull out what webbing is easily removed and put your bees in. They will be glad to have the head start. They have been taking over old hives when the moths leave for 10,000 years. They know exactly what to do.
