Re: Swarm traps worked

As above, watch the bees entering. If carrying pollen, move the colonies tonight and open them tomorrow. If they have been there a week, a new swarm is likely ready for #'s 6 thru 10 frames. They work fast when first hived. From a 5 frame nuc, they may swarm again within 2 to 3 weeks.

Re: Swarm-2/27/20

They will only draw comb when they have something to put in it. Are you feeding them heavily?

Re: Looking for two old drawn-out deep frames

Not only that, but frames diminish the space in the judgement of the bees. Mediums in a deep box gives them more cluster room and will be more attractive to them. Just check them often and don't allow them to cross comb.

Re: Looking for two old drawn-out deep frames

Do what Rob said. I have had many medium frames with nice straight comb on the bottom and used them for years.

I have heard some red maple is now blooming. Matt in Charlotte posted a video of bees loaded with pollen.

Re: What is this?

They may store it as sugar water and then it drys. That would explain the shapes.

Re: No room in freezer for honey stores. . .

I put the frozen frames in black plastic trash bags and tape all cracks. The honey stays good and no moths or beetles have ever gotten in. Just be sure they have been frozen for 4 days or more just before putting in bags.

Re: Solstice

Saturday, December 21, is winter solstice for us, but it is the first day of spring for the bees. As the days get longer, the queen will ramp up egg laying to get ready for the flowers. Your hive population will double to triple before the first flower blooms, so the food will go much faster. The co...

I think the only way to improve on that would be to move them to Florida until April. :P :D

Brass Gong

While proudly showing off his new fraternity house to friends, a college student led the way into the den. ?What?s the big brass gong and hammer for?? Asks one of his friends. ?That?s the talking clock? the Young man replies, with a grin. Let me show you how it works! And with that he gave it and ea...

Good advice

Advice from An Old Farmer Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong. Keep skunks and bankers at a distance. Life is simpler when you plow around the stump. A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor. Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled. Mean...

Re: Nucs - need some help.

I'm going to be the spoil sport. There's an old saying..... "Take your losses in the fall and split in the spring." It means combine the weak ones, IE: nucs, and combine them back in the spring. If you are losing the strong ones over winter and have to buy more in the spring, you surly can...

Re: Swarming - newbie questions

""" Open, drawn comb gives them additional space-""" But only if it is in or adjacent to the brood nest. The queen will not travel outside her contiguous brood nest to use empty space. She will swarm first. If you are going in to the hive, do it today, not this weekend....

Cook them down and mix half plum juice and half apple juice. Make jelly.

Re: Fanning at the entrance - in the morning

They are likely fanning to dry the nectar into honey that they are curing in the wild comb in the spacer. You should take some pics when that spacer is packed with wild comb honey.

Re: Cutout - how to schedule or arrange?

Two of the best, Rob Jacobs and Mark Case, will be at the Beez Needz field day tomorrow. If you want to do cutouts and removals, I would suggest going there and talking to them. It is not a one liner question. It needs time to be answered sufficiently.
