Re: Lost colony.. now what?
I had 2 going into the winter; both looked on the smaller side but the smallest hive when we had the weather for at least 8 days not getting out of freezing temps did that hive in... Through the years I've had experiences that you described and I now use a quilt box to help keep the moisture from dr...

Re: Supering for the honey flow
so talking to a couple of others in my area that have bees, all think the main flow is over and not many are bragging on getting much capped honey. Do you think because of the mild winter & the heavy rains we just got at the end of April and begging of May diminished the nectar or hindered the b...

Re: Supering for the honey flow
Same here, lots of activity and fanning, some are still bringing in pollen. Looking forward to going in tomorrow or Sunday, I already have new shallows on hoping for them to draw out the comb, then I'll have drawn out comb to add when necessary

I had the same thing, I pulled 9 shallow frames so I know it wasn't anything from sugar water... Glad to see you had the same thing since I hadn't seen anyone else posting about. I'm in Thomasville so I doubt moonshine in my local area "LOL" but ya never know..

Re: Bees out at night and swarming lights
It's not uncommon for me to see 2-3 on my back screen door in the morning, I figured these were late forgers that decided to land on the door since I leave the back deck light on for when my dog is out, by the time I get home in the afternoon they are gone. I've looked at them and on cold days and n...

Re: NC Hive Law restriction
Wow, I would have figured there was a limit on the amount of hives you could have a property so you couldn't have more than what would fit on your property
not that you needed 5 or more...

Re: Missing Queen
Now go out in the middle of the day and switch places with the hives. The returning foragers will return to the same place they have been, thus equalizing the hives again. I think I'll do that when I get home this afternoon, mine looks like they drifted as well from the 2 packages I got 2 weeks ago...

Re: Stores
If it were me I'd keep giving the sugar water until they start bringing in their own netar, I've been reading a lot of beekeepers are just now loosing their bees to starvation... Crazy winter we've had. The Nuc I just set up into a 10 frame hive body this past Sunday have pretty much eaten up 4 larg...

Re: Sad Day
I think they starved, they never moved up.. I had the bottom brood box with honey for the winter and honey in the supers above. I guess with all the rain we've had they ate what was in the brood box. The supers were still full of honey I couldn't see the brood until i knocked them off. I smelt each ...

Sad Day
I went home hoping to see the girls flying tonight but there were non, I opened the tops of both of my hives and they are dead... I checked them 20 days ago when I took a Quick look. Last week I tapped on the side and listened with my stethoscope and could hear them. Bummer I just bought a honey ext...

Re: Winter Planning--First Thoughts
It's been a busy month to keep an active eye on my hives with the rain we've had, I started getting worried when I went out to the hives and saw all the dead ones on the ground in front of the hives. I was able to take a peek inside the 2 hives Saturday and my large hive from last year isn't as larg...

Re: robbing
Yes sir, I did the same thing on small hive that I did a split on I put an aluminum adjustable reducer on it and made it closed all the way except the holes. My other hive seemed quite a bit active so I put the same type reducer, but besides the holes being open I gave them more to enter and exit on...

Re: Wayne's Bee Nuc
I'll be going into my into my strong Wayne's bee hive and pulling honey supers off for extracting tomorrow, Sunday if I have time I'm planning on doing a split off of it and doing a 5 frame Nuc and letting them re-queen. If it works out I'll be willing to sell that if anyone is interested
