Re: Cutout - how to schedule or arrange?

Two of the best, Rob Jacobs and Mark Case, will be at the Beez Needz field day tomorrow. If you want to do cutouts and removals, I would suggest going there and talking to them. It is not a one liner question. It needs time to be answered sufficiently.

There's still plenty of idiots in the world

Dozens of beehives were attacked and set on fire in Texas over the weekend in an act “beyond comprehension” that killed an estimated half a million bees, officials said.

Re: How to stop the bees from filling in the brood area with honey?

Add another deep and checkerboard. Although, it may be too late. Once they make up their mind, they usually swarm, whether you remove the queen cells or not.Removing the Q-cells is a great way to make a hive queenless and watch it die.

Re: When to check?

Looking for eggs is "mostly" for the beek, not the bees. You can look if you want, but should have large larva or capped brood within 14 days of install. It won't hurt to wait until then, will be easier to see than eggs, and you can get out quicker.

Re: Nuc questions

Use wax. Once the plastic is drawn out, the bees mdon't know the difference.

That's about what I would plan. Of course, when in a bee activity, I am always ready to change plans instantly when the circumstances require it.

Re: 4/16 Second Swarm

Most likely the queen got lost coming back from her mating flight and wound up on the bottom. They need to be removed and put in a nuc or hive.

Re: When to check?

Some people go in and release her after 4 days. As Rob said above, I wait 7 days, then check for eggs. As soon as I see eggs, I close them up and do not disturb except to feed for 10 or more days after seeing eggs. I have never had an introduction go wrong doing it that way. I feed until the first b...

I'll bring you a hive to put them in, then pick them up afterwards. :P

They will need to be released to mate in a SHORT number of days, or they won't ever mate.

I don't know what you CAN do, I just said what I WOULD do.
It is only going to get heavier and harder to handle as it stays there longer.

Whatever they are doing, I would take them down and put them in a hive or nuc.

Get a bottle of Fischer's bee quick and fill the oven vent. Hopefully, it will run them out before they have brood.

I do hope you replaced all missing frames Sunday. You NEVER want to leave empty space in a hive more than a day during comb drawing season.

Re: Newbie questions - variety of topics

Like Jacobs says, except I wait 7 days before opening the hive after installing a package. Then I only open it long enough to find eggs. I leave it closed for 10 or more days after finding eggs. Don't worry about checking it before the weather warms. Checking too often is much worse than checking to...

Re: First graft, 2019

Jacobs, myself, Keith from Beez Needz, and another helper set up 15 mating units yesterday and installed Wayne's queen cells. Hopefully, we will get a few nucs and queens for sale from them. We also grafted again Friday, March 22. Checked them yesterday and counted about 29, Those, too, were Wayne's...

Re: First graft, 2019

Moved 16 cells to the incubator today. Put 2 more frames in the starter to be cleaned. Will graft into them tomorrow.

16 of 40 doesn't sound too good, but it was rainy and cold here the day we grafted, so I'm not too awful disappointed.

Before we had SHB, they worked well. I would be very cautious with them now.
