Re: February Swarms?

I have an appointment to look at a hive in Pleasant Garden tomorrow. The owner says he thinks he has queen cells. Yes, things are starting to happen. Swarms are possible in Feb., and for sure the first half of march if this weather continues. Everyone should be checking their hives for cells as soon...

Luxury turns to necessity

A lady was complaining to her husband about remodeling her kitchen. "You have been telling me you were going to get me new cabinets for ten years!" said the wife. "They are a luxury and the ones we have are fine." the husband replied. The next day the wife goes to visit her mothe...

A man walks out to the street and catches a taxi just going by. He gets into the taxi, and the cabbie says, ‘Perfect timing. You’re just like Frank.’ Passenger: ‘Who?’ Cabbie: ‘Frank Feldman. He’s a guy who did everything right all the time. Like my coming along when you needed a cab, things happene...

Re: Don't Let Your Bees Starve

It's been over a month now since any flow. I am seeing more and more hungry hives as I visit neighborhood keeps. As Jacobs says, they ALL need to be checked ASAP.

Re: Late summer.......is this normal?

Bees fill boxes from top down, not from bottom up. Just because the top box is full, doesn't mean the bottom onesare. You need to check all frames in all boxes before assuming all 4 are full.

Re: When is it too late to split a hive

It depends on the size of the hive. You can split and add a laying queen in October if each half of the split receives 40 lbs. of honey and 20,000 bees. I wouldn't try to split a single deep hive after May.

Re: When to do sugar shake test?

The first time around, I would call your state inspector. He/she will come out, do the shake, examine your hives, advise but not demand, and it is all free. Then you will know how and when to do them in the future.

Re: Honey Bees In Tree

If you are doing it for free, there is another tree at an apartment complex downtown you can do when you finish that one. Then there is a tree on North church street that they will cut down for you so you can cut them out. If you want to do them all, contact me. If you are charging for it, don't do ...

That is exceptional for this area, but I have seen them collect and cap 5 gallon in 10 days along the gulf coast. The south Dakota and surrounding area is said to produce even more.

Re: Displaced bees

The supers should be extracted and either returned to the same hive or prepared and stored. Putting them on another hive is a great way to spread disease. Return enough of them to allow the bees to get inside at night. They can beard on the outside during the day.

Re: Trap Out in Sedgefield (SW GSO)

I think you have me mixed up with someone else. I don't remember seeing a column like that with bees at top and bottom. I would never cut into a column of that stature. Trapping the bottom section would be very simple, and I would gladly guide and help anyone who wanted to do it. The top is far beyo...

Re: Help Queen is gone

Is there capped brood? If not, the queen cell is a dud. If you have 7 or more frames covered in bees, buy a queen, if there is a good bit of capped cells. If no capped brood and less than 7 frames covered with bees, combine the hive with the stronger hive and feed it.
