Probably the best thing to do is to have him call Brushy mountain and order some from them.

swarming?

Well it seems as if the swarming has slowed a bit.
Got a call last night about one but for the most part it would seem as if they have stopped for the season.
Someday I will have a better understanding of how they think. Until then I guess i will win a few and lose a few.

Well... It is not uncommon for a hive to cast off multiple swarms or after swarms. I would sincerely doubt that the two you caught are from #3 or #4 unless they were well established and the brood chamber was over crowded. I have had a nuc to cast a swarm, so it is certainly possible. Typically abou...

Thought I would mention another source a little closer to home. Harold Curtis of Graham also sells some pretty nice queens. After speaking with his wife it sounds like he will have queens now through the end of July. If you want a couple, all you have to do is ride over and pick them up at a cost of...

Welcome!

I thought this might come in handy to address a specific question about a product of the hive that you are making and or selling.
You never know who might be able to answer your questions when the candles dont come out right or the mead doesnt ferment.

Swarm gone

I will tell a tale of the one that went away, not got away. I had a hive that was going to swarm (swarm cells on the bottom bar), so I decided that I would do a "Shook Swarm" onto some brand new equipment. A perfect way to make some Ross rounds or cut comb honey. Frame by frame I meticulou...

Queen availability

Hi everyone! In case anyone was interested, I have had some sucess in finding queens when needed this Spring. I had to call no less than a dozen or so queen producers bfore actually finding one that wasnt sold out through June. Even at the price of $15 I am not sure how they make any money. (H&R...

Hi mztec! I would recommend contacting Norman Faircloth (454-2331) or Emerson Heatherly (869-2647) for some local honey. Both guys live in High point and should be able to help you. If things dont work out please contact me directly at honeybeeharvest@yahoo.com or 697-2811. I live in Julian. Best re...

Bruce: I think swarming is a difficult issue for both the bees and the beekeeper. If they are about to swarm then you probably should have split them before they got to this point. I believe that the only profitable way to keep the bees is to split them right now. Once the bees have started the proc...

Hello Wally:

The storefront save is doing fine.
Had another one to have its queen stop laying altogether so I just killed the queen and combined it with a smaller hive.
Have split others and am up to 20 with 10 packages coming in this Saturday.
enough is enough!

Hi Beth! Hmmm!!! Well, if they havent taken any of the pollen cake then I would suggest that they are probably too small to concern themselves with it. You said you saw some with pollen sacks full? Have you actually seen any eggs recently? Drone cells are bullet shaped and almost always occur on the...

Hi Beth: Sorry for the late posting! I am afraid that most counties will already have run their beginner classes. Guilford county just finished it's program last Thursday and we had around 60 in attendance. Wow! How did beekeeping become so popular all of a sudden? Anyway, my suggestion would be to ...

The best thing to do is to make sure you have your supers on a week ahead of time. I would also quit feeding around the same time. As long as you are not honey bound, I do not see any reason that the bees would actually move sugar syrup from the brood chamber to you honey supers (regular or ross rou...

As for me I started with 17 colonies and have over wintered 16 giving me a loss of 5.8%. It doesnt concern me greatly since this colony was small going into the winter and I suspect queen failure.
I treat exclusively with FGMO/thymol cords and fog. I am going into my 4th season and am quite satisfied.

Hi everybody! It would be great to see the success/failure each beekeeper has had thus far for overwintering of your hives. Please indicate how many hives you started with and how many hives you have left currently. Also tell us how you teated and any other factors that may have contributed to your ...

Hi James! I think that we may see some losses due to the warm weather which spurred on brrod rearing. I think it was a make it or break it situation. Too much brood and not enough bees to take care of them and perhaps they couldnt get to the food once the cold snap hit again. Sorry for the loss. Wil...
