Spring buildup

Hi everyone! Sorry about the problems with our web page. It was quite an adventure to say the least. I was interested in seeing how everyones bees were doing? Are they building up and have you started feeding yet? I am wondering if there wont be some early swarming if we arent careful. Let me know h...

Sugar syrup avalable

Came across this information and thought it might be helpful for the upcoming season. Syrup is available from: Atlantic Sweetener, Fort Mill, S C , the contact is Scott Wohlfarth, phone (803)548-3877. (pick-up is the same place in Charlotte as before) I spoke with Scott and this what is available: B...

Most just simply give them a number. Mine being numbered 1-17. Theft is a rare occurance around the Piedmont Triad so few would probably resort to branding. I have however heard of one occurance. I would think theft would be almost non-existant in town since most people are afraid of bees. And we al...

winter stores and health

Hi everyone! just thought I would get some feedback on how your bees are doing. Mine have been generally light on stores and some even light on bees. I expect upwards of a 25% loss this winter due to colony size. I may end up combining a couple just to see if I can get them to overwinter. The...

Hi Bruce: If you manage to find some used Ross Round equipment, please take the time to have it fumigated by the state. It always seems easier to just use it, but I have been burnt and personally known others that have ended up getting diseases from other people's stuff. I will let you know if I com...

Hi Bruce! Sounds like you are in a pretty good position for the winter! As long as you have a viable queen going into the winter and she is still laying you should be OK. A lot of bees is a good thing for cluster size. You may still want to feed one last time just to get the queen to lay some new eg...

Hi Wally!
How do you check the weight of your hives in the fall?
From an economic standpoint, I would rather harvest the Spring honey and feed sugar syrup going into the Winter.
In order to leave a super on if a hive is too light, how long do you wait to extract?

Aster

If anyone was wondering, the Aster is definately in bloom. The bees seem to be taking advantage of it and you can smell it if you walk in front of your hives.
No it's not foulbrood and your bees probably havent started a brewery!
After a while you kind of enjoy it.

As many may or may not have heard, there are several things in the works concerning sugar syrup in North Carlolina. Currently the closest source for any bee feed pre made would probably be Jack Tapp of Busy Bee Apiaries. Jack is providing corn syrup at a cost of $2.00 per gallon. Jack prefers 5 gall...

Hi JC! The fall honey flow varies from year to year but is usually not enough to harvest in this area. I believe that in the North it is a greater crop. The Fall honey also has a tendancy to crystallize more quickly than the Spring crop so we usually just leave it for the bees. THe good news is that...

Going to BusyBee to buy beekeeping stuff!

One of the main reasons I enjoy this forum is that it can be an effective communication tool. I will be going to BusyBee Apiaries (a Brushy Mountain Distributor) in the next couple of weeks. I am willing to pick up and bring back some stuff for others if you get your order in soon (say by August 14)...

In the past I have tried to salvage the existing comb. It is difficult and depending on the width of the comb it may or may not be worthwhile. (If it is wide enough to fit the frame it can be cut to shape and secured by rubber bands) I dont even bother any more. I just give them a little drawm comb....

Ron: Yes I have extracted all of my honey! At this point I still extract instead of doing cut comb or something else. I believe that there is a market for cut comb and know of only one woman doing it locally. You are correct about the Tulip Poplar. It is extrememly dark and seems to have a red tint ...

Bee removal

:o Wow! Yesterday evening I removed a colony of bees from between some plywood and the plate glass of a storefront. Things actually went better than planned and I was able to complete the job in about an hour. Believe it or not I found the queen before ever starting to remove the bees. She was just ...

Hi Ron! Sounds like an ideal site for the bees. I started harvesting honey around the first of June and still have quite a bit to take off. Around here you can expect the Tulip poplar and clover to be the main sources. I think the blend is exceptional and everyone I know loves the taste. The honey f...

Hi Ron! Great to hear from you again! I live on the other side of I 40/85 in the Julian area. Still in Guilford county, but pretty far out. It seems that otherwise they are showing some distinct advantages. Currently, the NC inspectors are not putting much interest in tr...
