Newspaper Article

Nice article in the Wednesday May 19 Wall Street Journal on the increased interest in beekeeping, Section D (Presonal Journal) page 1. Might be able to read on line, nothing technical but good publicity is always nice.

Rough first year, trying again

My first year of beekeeping was fun but vexing and in the end I lost both hives over the winter, first was weak and robbed barren in the four days between visits and the second stronger one looks like they froze. I have two packages of bees on order from Brushy, my question is: How much of the drawn...

checked yesterday (Monday) afternoon - feeders largely untouched since last feeding on Wednesday. Most of frames in top supers have significant honey in them and bees were too busy to pay much attention to me.

So far so good.

Add a super now?

I've been consistently feeding my two new hives since getting them as nucs in late spring. Currently have a total of three shallow mediums for each of the hives. When feeding them over the weekend I discovered that in the stronger hive they have built up a lot of comb inside the hive top feeder duri...

Are yellowjackets robbers?

Found a yellowjacket nest not to far from where my hives are located, will the yellow jackets attack the hives or rob from them?

Do they pose a significant danger to my hives?

Thanks!

Liked your idea! I used a large clay dish from the garden supply shop, bottom piece for a planer. When I told them what I was doing they gave me a bird bath bottom to sit it on, they had broken the top and couldn't sell it anyway. Put a few handfuls of gravel in the "feeder" so the ladies ...

Checked the hives, both look good. Filling out nicely. Went into them late morning on a sunny day with much better results - removed the inner cover and filled the top feeders with syrup. Bees really paid me no attention this time. When I visited the hives in the evening after dinner are the occasio...

Will place inner cover in storage until needed, thanks. Haven't checked recently (2 weeks) for queen or new eggs. The hive grew rapidly - I've added two medium supers since installing the original nuc and they were both being used - and is quite active. Since they have become bothered by my attentio...

I must be doing something to upset them. I'm using the hive top feeder but the hive seems to get quite excited when I remove the inner cover. The first feeding or two after installing the new nucs were simple and fast, since the hive has grown feeding has become "an adventure". They are st...

Protective clothing?

I'm currently visiting my 2 brand new hives about 2 or 3 times a week to feed and inspect. I am wearing some tyvek coveralls and a hat & veil combo. The tyvek coveralls seem to work quite well (I learned that blue jeans don't) but are starting to wear out. Any suggestions as to what I should rep...

Feeding question

Started my first two hives in April, English Garden, with nucs. They are expanding nicely and eating rapidly. I've been feeding heavy syrup, should I switch to light or stay with heavy?

This is fun!

8 frame or 10?

Brushy Mtn is really pushing their 8 frame set up. Anybody ever used one and would they do so again?

She will also be at class Thursday night. Remind me and I'll point her out to you.

Startup questions

I'm currently taking the beekeeping class with the goal of establishing a hive or two in my yard for the benefit of my garden and the neighborhood. I'm getting overwhelmed by all of the reading and realize I just need to get started and learn by experience. A few questions I hope you folks can help ...
